The darkroom and photoshop have some editing techniques in common. For film, you can use the darkroom to use dodge and burn or create a double exposure, and you can also do this in photoshop with digital photos.
To dodge an image means to block out light in order to make parts of the image brighter. Here is the before and after of the image I used the dodge tool on:
It helped a bit, but if I used it too much the image would become graphic-y and grainy.
To burn an image means to increase the exposure to make an area of the image darker. Here is the before and after of the image I used the burn tool on:
I darkened the background to make her face stand out, yet it didn't have the effect I wanted.
The sponge tool is used to saturate or desaturate a specific area of your image. Here is the before and after of the image I used the sponge tool on:
I used the sponge tool to make the background a lot less green, which I enjoy a lot.
A double exposure is when two images are layed on top of eachother and blended together.
A simple double exposure is when two images are layed on top of eachother and blended to be able to see both images. You can use the mask tool in photoshop or layer negatives in the negative carrier in the darkroom.
A complex double exposure is when you replace part of an image with another image, where you can expose certain parts of the image you want in the darkroom.
This is my simple double exposure:
I merged a digital photo of Mackenzie with a film photo of a flower I took in photoshop to create this.
This is my complex double exposure:
I merged a digital photo of Mackenzie with a photo from the internet of a robot from the movie Ex Machina. I removed her mouth from the image by using the lasso tool in photoshop and masking the rest how I wanted to make it look as natural as I could.
The strongest image I have is my simple double exposure because of the placement of the flower on her nose. I like how I lined in up and how elegant it feels.
The challenges I faced in this assignment were using photoshop correctly to achieve the effect I wanted and working with the complex double exposure to make it look nice. I still think it could look better but I did the best I could with the skills I have aquired.
